Real Estate’s newest release The Main Thing is another album with mellow out music, but lyrics that reflect real life scenarios. However, instead of it being about toxic relationships, this is one is about life in today’s society.
In the album’s first song, Friday, lead singer Martin Courtney sings “If there is a point to this, it’s something I must have missed”. To me, that’s just the feeling that many people have nowadays. This is reflected in the songs of the album. For example, “Also a but” has themes of toxic waste and nuclear war and “Procession” is about a funeral going through a town. What is the point of everything? To me, the answer is in the song “The Main Thing”. The song starts with the lyrics “ Despite the crushing weight, Of all that’s on our plate, Despite the true significance of Everything at stake”. Then, the song immediately goes into the chorus “I will stay true, The main thing, It’s all I can do, The main thing”. Maybe that’s the point: it’s the fact that we keep pushing forward, no matter what life throws at us.
The music of the album is very chill. Something you would listen to when you’re relaxing at home. When I was listening to this album, I was nodding my head and tapping my foot. I don’t know why, but I was reminded of “Pumped up Kicks” by Foster the People again. Why? It’s because of the music. It always seemed so calm and happy and fun, but the lyrics are depressing. It’s making me wonder why? Why would happy music have such sad lyrics? Maybe it’s to give hope as sung in “Silent World”? To hold on to our innocence in “You”? I don’t know. Something that made me think.
Despite this, The Main Thing is a good album by Real Estate. Good music to chill out to and lyrics to make you wonder about life and, possibly, give you hope.
