Album Review: Fungus II by Wasted Shirt

Wasted Shirt is the band composing of Ty Segall, a man who has been in many bands (Fuzz, Party Fowl, and The C.I.A to name a few), and Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt. Together, they made Fungus II, an album with many songs that call back to early metal bands and punk. This is the music that plays when life is in chaos.

The songs are mainly instrumental, with very little lyrics. And, in my opinion, that’s ok. It’s the music that sets the feeling of the album, and that feeling is PURE CHAOS. Chippendale’s drumming and Segall’s use of guitar bass and harmonizer just ooze insanity and I love it.  While the album is metal inspired, the song “All is Lost” had some punk thrown in as well. The music made me think of different things. For example, “Zeppelin 5”, the albums second track, made me think of being chased through a city.

Let’s go back to the lyrics. While the music sets the feeling of the album, the short lyric passages tell the story. In the song “Double the Dream”, the singer is paranoid. He’s questioning everything around him and is trying to keep his act together. In the end, he screams “Dream, Dream, Dream, Dream”. To me, it’s clear that he’s losing his sanity and wants to just dream. What he wants to dream about? I don’t know. But, many of the song’s lyrics have some small chaotic story told.

When I first heard “All is Lost”, I was taken aback. For awhile, I’ve been reviewing very mellow albums, this was a very nice change of pace. It was chaotic, crazy and fun to listen too. This I would recommend.
