Album Review: All or Nothing by Shopping

All or Nothing is the latest album by the band Shopping. This album by the post-punk band that has the punk feel to it, with some other genres mixed in. The lyrics are amazing as well, telling different stories, and have heavy themes as well. The album

Two songs that stood out to me were the songs “lies” and “about you”. “Lies” is about a person who is in a horrible relationship. The person, let’s call him Kevin. Kevin is always telling our protagonist lies and always manipulates them as well. With that, they decide it’s enough. They don’t know where Kevin’s taking them. So, they dump Kevin and “leave it all behind.” This is a song that should inspire people who are in an abusive relationship to stand up for themselves and say “ENOUGH!”

“About you” is about a person who, like our protagonist in “lies”, is in a relationship with a person who is very self-centered. The chorus has the lines “Making this, Making this about you, Making this, How much more can you take?” This makes me think that our protagonist is starting to lose their sanity to this person. The outro to the song has a warning to those who may be in similar situations: “There is no rhyme. There is no reason. Your time is now. Don’t wish your life away. We make the same mistakes all over and again, and again, and again.” This should be taken into consideration when beginning a new relationship.

The music of the album was great, as well. It had that punk feel to it. It had the distorted guitars, synthesizers, all that jazz. Honestly, the music had me banging my head a bit. It reminded me of Foster the People “Pumped Up Kicks”. Songs that have catchy music, but have really dark and heavy themes.  Now that I think about it, it does remind me of Foster the People

All or Nothing is a great album. Lots of catchy music with heavy and important themes. Shopping did a great job on this album. I can’t wait for their next album.
