2/24, the number of Gianna Bryant and the number of Kobe Bryant and the day of their memorial after the tragic loss of these two on January 26th.
At 7:30 a.m. thousands of mourners arrived for the public memorial of the Bryants in downtown Los Angeles.
Among them was 72-year-old Bob Melendez, who said he has been a
Laker’s season ticket holder for 40 years now. He said after seeing Bryant play at the Staples Center for so long, that he couldn’t imagine missing today’s memorial.
Alyssa Shapiro said she was inspired to become a
basketball player after watching countless Lakers games with her
father, Rick Shapiro. The Bryant family’s love of the game and their work in women’s sports-inspired her to become a middle school girls’ basketball coach.
Shapiro made a heart shaped “Kobe” and “Gigi” signs ahead of the memorial service and said she “just wanted to thank him for being such an inspiration ” to her.
