A course in African American history may be offered in Texas high schools as soon as next school year.

The State Board of Education on Wednesday expressed interest in modeling the course after one already offered by the Dallas ISD.

Possible topics include the history of slavery and emancipation, the civil rights movement, and contributions of black Americans.

Several dozen people, including students and teachers, spoke in support of the idea.

The elective course could be adopted by April and offered in the 2020-21 school year.
