Album Review: “Vagabon” Self-Titled

Indie-Rock has been getting a lot more traction as the years progress with many artists exploring different styles. Vagabon, Cameroonian born 24- year-old artist based from New York City is definitely a shining star in that group. Laetitia Tamko self-titled project Vagabon has tracks that explore being self- aware of one’s troubles with relationships, societal expectations, and commentary of what she see’s with women dealing with in today’s climate.

‘Full Moon in Gemini’

This track carries smooth baselines and production that almost makes the listener feel as if they are at a symphony. A good example of this is Full Moon in Gemini, that explores a hopeful relationship that is vocalized as a dream and reminisces of past experiences that Tamko romanticizes. The vocals are meshed with the beat perfectly and aren’t overbearing with each other, which allows for the appreciation of the violin strings.

   ‘Flood’

It takes a lot to realize how much it hurts to leave something so good and track two on this project shows Tamko being alright with that energy. The hook of the track is one of the catchier of the project but nonetheless more forthcoming with Tamko’s emotions coming to play of her demise within the relationship. Definitely a song to repeat, with its production alone as well.

‘Secret Medicine’

As a sequel to her emotions from the previous track, Secret Medicine gives the listener a perspective of how her previous relationship wasn’t something she regrets. Tamko is aware of this, and still finds the humor in what happened between her and her lover. Her low and euphoric vocals as well highlight her mournfulness of it.

‘Water Me Down’

This single from the project is one of the more lush and groovy tunes that provide a cohesive sound of baselines, a vocal production that carries many layers, and a truthful tone. Tamko expresses her hopefulness and optimism of what she can learn and become from the harmful relationship with her ex-lover. The track can be appreciated for its depth and metaphoric message, backed behind it’s aquatic sound.

‘In A Bind’

In A Bind gives us Tamko’s perspective of a relationship that is diminished from someone else, but still blames herself for its demise. The production of the track is simple yet still explores more euphoric tones that you can hear on other records. Although the case, it’s still refreshing to hear a different perspective other than having the same type of morrow and regret from the previous tracks.

As for the most played song in my opinion, ‘Every Woman’ is probably the most important song on this project that really captures what Vagabon’s mission really is. To empower, and to bring to light that every woman has their struggles that make them stronger, and she does this so that not to feel pity, but to appreciate and understand what your fellow woman has on their plate.

Vagabon has made herself a place on the indie-rock scene as a strong vocalist that is a minority in what is a primarily white genre, and she’s voiced that she’s much more than a statistic, but a gem. Take a look for yourself and experience the euphoric ride that is Vagabon. Available on Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal.
