Album Review: “Dark Thoughts” by The Shivas

The Shivas is relatively new to my ears, but 2010 knew them well and were aware of their explosiveness. The band returns with an emphatic LP after three years from hitting us with Better of Dead (2016). This new record explores their lust for passion, sex, and life.

“Gloria”

As they proclaim their love, they also let a woman-named Gloria of how they feel just from the sight of her. The track carries many guitar riffs that interchange just seconds between them, creating many intervals of emotion that you can feel from the vocals as well. Definitely a great way to start the record.

‘Turn Me On”

If surfing is something you love to do, this track would serve as the best anthem. The Shivas tune in on this feeling with a repetitive chorus, and of course a great performance of chords that sort of channels Marty McFly playing for his parents prom night. This might not be something to play in the bedroom as the title might allude, but it is something to listen to get excited for such a occasion.

“Playing On The Radio”

This track as catchy and abrasive as it is, there’s not much lyrics that accompany it, but it does serve a good transition into a different mood switch for the next track. So if anything, it is a good song to play on the radio if you want to listen to something that’ll raise the mood of your day.

“If You See Me”

Easily one of the favorites for this project, this track carries a more somber yet assuring tone that the rest, as the chords are slowed down and the vocals are taken over by Kristin Leonard, the band’s harmonious drummer. This track carries a lot of emotional weight as she explains her desire to be isolated but could the vocals themselves could be raised or mixed a lot better so that it wouldn’t sound too inaudible.

More tracks on this LP such as ‘I Want You’ and ‘Feels Surreal’ are good examples of how The Shivas stand out. ‘Feels Surreal’ has a psychedelic Halloween tone that seems rather fitting for this time of year, and adds to their trippy aura. ‘I Want You’ has it’s moments but whenever they have fun with the vocal effects and the guitar pedals, it makes for a great feel good tune that overshadows its grainy sound.

This project encapsulates many records that make The Shivas, which is fearless. As much as it takes a while to get through not being able to really understand the lyrics at times, the emotion and bravado stand upfront with songs that tackle your everyday human tragedy. Make sure to check out this fun-filled project on Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal, as well tune in to KTXT 88.1 that play your favorite records.
