The Washington Redskins have fired head coach Jay Gruden this morning after beginning the season 0-5.
Gruden went 35-48-1 and one playoff appearance with six seasons at the helm of the Redskins. Back in 2015, Gruden lost Robert Griffin III to a concussion during the preseason and announced Kirk Cousins as the starter. That team ended up improving greatly from their last season finishing with a 9-7 record to clinch the NFC East division title and make the playoffs. They, unfortunately, had to face Aaron Rodgers and lost the Wild Card round to the Packers 35-18.
After that season, the Redskins went 8-7-1 and then for two straight years had the losing record of 7-9. In those years, they did lose some major talent in DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Ricky Jean-Francois, RG3, and Kirk Cousins.
Washington released a statement about letting Gruden go, saying: “Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility. Moving forward we are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans and alumni a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond.”
There have been reports that offensive line coach Bill Callahan will replace Gruden and be the interim head coach for the Redskins.
