Texas Tech junior wide receiver T.T. Vasher turned heads when he made an unbelievable one-handed grab early in the 2018 season opener versus Ole Miss.
Some proclaimed it might very well end up as the catch of the year in collegiate football. Turns out, it could be the best performance in all of sports as Vasher’s highlight-worthy catch is one of 16 nominees for “Best Play” at the annual ESPY Awards.
Vasher is the No. 9 seed in ESPN’s fan vote as his catch is paired again a similarly stellar catch from Manchester High School (Va.) senior Kevin Henderson, who pinned a pass against the defender’s helmet and then knocked the ball into his own hands for a 48-yard touchdown.
Vasher isn’t the only Red Raider with a rooting interest in the “Best Play” fan vote, though, as North Shore High School, the alma mater of freshman defensive lineman Tony Bradford Jr., is also nominated for its successful Hail Mary attempt that secured the Class 6A Division I state championship this past year.
Additionally, Texas Tech’s own Patrick Mahomes II is also nominated for two awards – Best NFL Player and Top Male Athlete. It is the first ESPY nomination for Mahomes, who was named the NFL MVP this past year after a seller debut with the Kansas City Chiefs where he threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns.
Dating back to his time as a Red Raider, Mahomes, the cover athlete on the upcoming EA Sports Madden NFL 20, is the only quarterback all-time to throw for 5,000 yards at both the collegiate and NFL levels.
