Jung, Warren Named Bragan Collegiate Slugger Finalists

Texas Tech baseball’s Josh Jung and Cameron Warren have been named finalists for the third-annual Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger award (BBCSA), the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Red Raider duo makes up half of the finalist field, joined by Tulane’s Kody Hoese and New Mexico State’s Nick Gonzales. Jung and Warren are looking to become Tech’s second award winner as Hunter Hargrove took home the inaugural honor in 2017.

The BBCSA is based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity, as nominations were open to all Division-I baseball programs in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico. The winner of the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award will be announced in June and honored at a gala in the fall.

Jung is the 2019 Big 12 Co-Player of the Year after ranking among the league leaders in nearly every offensive category. The San Antonio, Texas, native went No. 8 overall to the Texas Rangers in the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft on Monday following another All-American season in which he is hitting .340 with 11 home runs, 22 doubles, 53 RBI and 59 runs scored. The junior made a smooth transition from third base to shortstop midway through the year to help lead the Red Raiders to the Big 12 Championship and a Super Regional bid.

The lone senior on the club, Warren has put up All-American numbers with a team-leading 17 home runs and Big 12-leading 75 RBI. Warren leads the Red Raiders with a .367 average and .693 slugging percentage and ranks second at getting on base. The two-time Big 12 Player of the Week has blossomed into a lockdown defender at first base as well with just two errors on the year.

Strong on the field and in the classroom, Jung and Warren were both Academic All-Big 12 First Team selections this season and tabbed to the Google Cloud Academic All-District First Team. Warren is a Higher Education Administration graduate student with a 4.00 GPA last semester, while Jung is a communications studies major.

The Red Raiders continue their season this weekend in the NCAA Super Regionals against No. 9 Oklahoma State. The best-of-three series begins at 2 p.m. Friday on ESPN 2.
