Texas Tech junior shortstop Josh Jung was named Wednesday the winner of the prestigious Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award (BBCSA), which is determined based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity.
Jung becomes the second Red Raider to win the award, joining the likes of Hunter Hargrove, who claimed the inaugural in 2017. The award honors the top baseball student-athlete in the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico.
“I am humbled and honored to be selected as the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award recipient for 2019,” Jung said. “I am proud to be recognized as a student-athlete and would like to congratulate the other finalists, who were equally deserving. This award is special because it rewards not only the athlete, but includes high academic standards and personal integrity.”
This is the fourth recognition already this year for Jung as he was previously recognized as the Big 12 Co-Player of the Year and a second team All-American by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. He claimed the Bobby Bragan Award over fellow finalists Kody Hoese of Tulane, Nick Gonzales of New Mexico State and his teammate Cameron Warren.
Jung is coming off possibly his most memorable performance as a Red Raider as he went deep twice this past Sunday to propel the Red Raiders to the College World Series following an 8-6 victory over Oklahoma State. Jung crushed his second home run of the night via a solo shot to lead off the eighth inning, which Tech erase a two-run deficit with four runs in the frame.
Jung, a San Antonio native, homered three times during the NCAA Lubbock Super Regional alone, giving him 14 now on the season to go along with a .342 average and 56 RBI. He has reached base at a .476 clip that also includes 22 doubles and 52 walks.
Defensively, Jung has proven to be one of the top infielders in the country once again, even with a position change from third base to shortstop midway through the season. Jung has only recorded two errors since his move to shortstop as Tech is 22-7 during that stretch.
Jung will return to Omaha for the second time in his career Saturday when the Red Raiders open the College World Series in a 1 p.m. first pitch against Michigan. Coverage will be provided nationally on ESPN as well as the Texas Tech Sports Network.
