A trio of Texas Tech golfers in Sophia Garcia, Ivan Ramirez and Sandy Scott helped lead the International Team to a win at the Arnold Palmer Cup on Sunday at The Alotian Club.
Ramirez secured a 3&2 win on Sunday in singles play over Brandon Wu for an International Team win. Ramirez made six birdies on the day and secured the match with two holes to play. He was 5-under when the match was determined after he won the No. 7 hole with a birdie. Scott was 4-under on Sunday in his match against Will Grimmer that ended in an all-square result.
Garcia made her presence known throughout the weekend, as the sophomore from Asuncion, Paraguay took two of her final three matches to conclude the event at 2-1-1.
Following her matches with Ramirez, she and partner Hira Naveed of Pepperdine battled against Team USA in the afternoon foursomes on Saturday afternoon. Garcia and Naveed held an advantage for nine holes while never falling behind by more than one hole. Ultimately, Cooper and Nam of Team USA would birdie the final hole to tie the match. In Sunday’s singles action, Garcia took control early on and led the match for 12 of 18 holes to secure a 2UP victory over Abbey Carlson of Vanderbilt.
On Saturday, Scott helped the International Team gain points with a 6&5 win in Mixed Foursome play with his teammate Julie McCarthy (Auburn). Scott won the opening hole with a birdie and then two more birdies in the round for the 6&5 victory following the pairing’s opening-day win in Mixed Fourball on Friday.
Ramirez and Garcia also earned a win on Saturday, posting a 1UP victory in the Mixed Foursome with five birdies in their round. The pair of Red Raiders led by two after nine holes and would win the match with a par on the final hole and their opponents making a bogey.
Sunday’s 33.5-26.5 win for the International squad was the first in the United States since 2009. The United States team leads the series overall 12-10-1.
