Texas Tech sprinter Divine Odururu’s historic performance at the Michael Johnson Invitational continues to earn him recognition. The Nigerian junior, who Saturday ran a sub-10 100m and sub-20 200m, has been named Athlete of the Week by both the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and Big 12 for his performance. He became just the 10th man to ever break the 10- and 20-second barrier in the same day.
Oduduru’s evening in Waco began with the 100m, in which he ran a 9.94 to become the first Red Raider ever to break the 10-second barrier. In addition to placing him atop the school record books and NCAA leaderboards, it also made him the new world leader in the event.
Just 45 minutes after becoming the 123rd man in world history to go sub-10, Oduduru became the 73rd to go sub-20 in the 200m, running a blistering 19.76 to become the world leader in his second event of the hour.
Ever proud of his home country, Oduduru was pleased to know he was the ninth Nigerian ever to go sub-10, and just the second to go sub-20. Nigeria has not had a sub-20 200m time in over a decade.
Texas Tech will return home for its first meet in Lubbock since March. The one-day competition, the Corky/Crofoot Classic, will take place on Friday and will feature the recognition of 24 Red Raider seniors. The meet will begin at 11 a.m., and senior ceremonies will take place at 4:30 p.m.
