No. 15 Texas Tech baseball continues its home stand by welcoming New Mexico to Lubbock for a midweek tussle Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park.
The Lobos (18-21, 7-11) were originally scheduled to head to Lubbock for a two-game series, but both teams mutually agreed to shorten the series to the lone game Tuesday, thereby canceling their game on Wednesday.
The Red Raiders (25-13, 8-7) are in the midst of a 10-game home stand and a stretch of 15-of-18 home games to close out the regular season. Texas Tech is a stout 17-4 at home this season, including 5-1 against ranked foes.
This week marks the second of two midweek series between the Red Raiders and Lobos this season. The teams opened the month of April in Albuquerque, splitting a two-game set. Tech took the opener 15-6 and led 8-2 in the finale before falling 12-9.
Tuesday will be the 123rd meeting between the two programs with Tech holding a 74-47-1 advantage all-time. The series leans heavily in Tech’s favor in games played in Lubbock as the Red Raiders are 46-20 against the Lobos in the Hub City. Tech has won five in a row over the Lobos in Lubbock with New Mexico’s last win coming in 2015.
Texas Tech is coming off of a series win over No. 18 Baylor in which the Red Raiders took the final two games behind sold out crowds at Rip Griffin Park. After battling back from a 9-3 hole in the opener to force extras, Tech rallied again in the middle game with Cody Masters hitting a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to even the series. It was an offensive explosion that put Tech ahead 9-0 and sent Tech to a 13-3 run-rule victory in game three to clinch the series.
New Mexico is entering Lubbock after a series win over nonconference opponent UC Riverside in Albuquerque. The Lobos dropped an 18-10 tilt on Thursday before fighting back for a pair of one-run wins, 11-10 on Friday and 10-9 on Saturday.
Texas Tech is 7-2 in midweek games this season and 2-0 at home. The No. 14 scoring offense in the nation, Tech is averaging 7.9 runs per game this season and 8.9 during midweeks. The Red Raider lineup ranks 10th nationally in base on balls and 16th in batting.
Following the matchup, Texas Tech will gear up to host No. 18 Oklahoma State (25-13, 10-5) for another key three-game home series April 26-28 at Rip Griffin Park. The Cowboys currently sit atop the league standings with the Red Raiders two games back
