The dream of reaching the NFL will hopefully become a reality for several Red Raiders this weekend as the 2019 NFL Draft begins Thursday night in downtown Nashville, Tennessee.
The likes of Dakota Allen and Antoine Wesley as well as other Red Raiders
will hope to hear their named called during the three-day draft that begins with the opening round Thursday followed by rounds two and three Friday night and the remaining four rounds Saturday.
Tech has had four players selected in the NFL Draft over the last three years alone, headlined by reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes II, who was taken with the No. 10 overall pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017. Mahomes sat the majority of his rookie year before becoming only the second player all-time to throw for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns this past season to lead the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game.
For Wesley, he’s hoping to become the fourth Red Raider wide receiver to be drafted in the last four years alone after he ranked second nationally in 2018 with 1,410 receiving yards. Tech currently ranks as one of nine schools nationally to have three of its wide receivers selected in the draft since 2016.
Allen, meanwhile, is looking to join the likes of Will Smith (2014) and Mike Smith (2005) as the only Red Raider linebackers during the Big 12 era to be drafted. He ranked second on the team this past season with 73 tackles to go along with two fumble recoveries and 6.5 tackles for a loss.
NFL Network, ESPN and ABC will all provide television coverage of the NFL Draft, which begins at 7 p.m. Thursday evening and resumes at 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. Mahomes will be part of ABC’s coverage as he will join “Good Morning America” co-host Robin Roberts prior to the first pick.
