Cows on Hourglass pond, by Avey Tare of Animal Collective, is an album with synthesizers in use and songs that reflect the journey of life. Recorded on an 1980’s era Tascom recorder, the album has music that’s really mellow. Music that you can chill out to, like relaxing in your room or looking at the night sky on a clear night.
Two songs talk about life. “What’s the goodside?” and “Eyes on eyes”, the first two songs on the album. For the first one, Tare sings “Me and the bubble, Started as liquid, Formed a core, reacted to the wind blowing”. These lyrics are referring to pregnancy. Also, he sings “Do you wanna embrace it?, But the aging heart’s been born of this, It’ll take some getting used to, But the aging heart stood warm, in bliss.” These lyrics are referring to life as an elderly person. There’s an interesting contrast between the two songs. Also, “Eyes on eyes” deals with life later on in life. The song has lyrics that has the person talk about the different sets of eyes that he’s seen. Some eyes gave him pleasure, some reminded him of his childhood. This song is a good one for anyone remembering someone from their past.
In fact, that’s what the album is about: remembering things as a kid. The songs on the album all have lyrics of childhood experiences. Saturdays (again) is about spending a Saturday with family. Our little chapter is about young love that a child may have. Nostalgia in Lemonade is subject on a date over a glass of lemonade. K.C. Yours is about a lost toy at a bus stop. These are all things the subject in the album has done. The subject is remembering his life as a kid, when things were simpler. And when have we not done something like that? When have we not remembered what we did as children? This album can be a reminder to take time to remember the good times.
Cows on Hourglass Pond by Avey Tare is a great album. It has music that you can relax to and lyrics that can make anyone remember their childhood. If you’re feeling nostalgic about life, you’ll like this album.
