Raquel Villarreal has been working as a nurse at Covenant Plainview for almost 40 years, but in her free time, she sits and crochets hats.
Villarreal said she makes them and gives them to children in the hospital. She said a lot of the children at the hospital are sick and need something to help keep them warm and comfort them when they’re scared.
Jaydin Galvan, 10, said he loves the hats she has given him and they are all different.
“I really like this one because I like the minions,” Jaydin said. “This one is the Pikachu, this one is the Cowboys one.”
Jose Galvan, Jaydin’s father, said he won’t take one off until he gets a new one.
“Sometimes it’s weird to see him without them on cause we haven’t seen his hair in awhile,” Jose Galvan said.
Villarreal said you can clearly see how happy the hats make him when you bring him a new one. She said it is just worth seeing him smile.
Villarreal said she has made hundreds of hats for the patients.
“It takes me about an hour and a half, to make a regular size cap, as long as I have a picture of it I can make whatever you show me,” Villerreal said.
Villerreal said it takes no time at all and is a great way to relax.
“It’s mostly something that I like to do and like I said it just makes the kids so happy when they see them that it’s rewarding,” Villarreal said.
She said it’s also a way to give back to patients who need it the most.
“Kids, I would give them a hat, and they’d forget about what they were going through,” Villarreal said.
