After his third season at the helm of the Texas Tech volleyball team, head coach Tony Graystone has signed a three-year contract extension, announced by Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt.
“Coach Graystone has revitalized our volleyball program and has made us a competitor in the Big 12 Conference,” Hocutt said. “We look forward to continued success and improvements under coach Graystone’s leadership.”
Graystone, whose contract was originally set from 2016-2020, received a three-year extension that will now last through the 2023 season. Hocutt announced Graystone as Texas Tech’s ninth head volleyball coach on Jan. 21, 2016.
“I really appreciate Kirby’s continued support and his commitment to Red Raider volleyball, as well as this coaching staff,” Graystone said. “It is a privilege to lead this program and I am so excited about our future. We have taken great steps over the past three seasons and I know we are just getting started.”
In just three seasons, Graystone has compiled a 46-49 overall record and has put the Red Raiders on the map as a force to be reckoned with. During his inaugural campaign, Graystone guided his squad to improvement in several statistical categories from the prior season, including kills, assists, service aces, digs, solo blocks and total blocks.
Under his supervision, four Red Raiders received All-Big 12 postseason accolades and senior setter Missy Owens highlighted the quartet with Big 12 Co-Setter of the Year and All-Big 12 First-Team laurels. Fellow senior Katy Keenan made the All-Big 12 Second Team along with junior Emily Hill and freshman Brooke Kanas, who was also tabbed to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team.
The 2018 season marked the first time since the formation of the Big 12 that Texas Tech has had four Red Raiders represented and the six total distinctions set a program record. Graystone’s crew set another program record with 10 Academic All-Big 12 Honors and led the conference for a second-straight year as four student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs.
