Album Review: Lux Prima by Karen O and Danger Mouse

Lux Prima is the first collaboration between Karen o, lead singer of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’s, and Danger Mouse, a musician who’s worked with artists like Adele and The Black Keys. This album features different music styles and genres blended together, but work together perfectly. This ranges from punk, rock, orchestra, and some psychedelic music. This album has something for everyone.

Two of my favorite songs on this album is “Woman” and “Leopard’s tongue”. “Woman” has a punk feel in the music, a reference to the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. With lyrics such as This song can be considered a anthem for women all over the world. “Leopard’s tongue” has a rock feel to it, something you can headbang to. And those were my favorites. There are other songs that may appeal to others. “Redeemer” and “Turn the light”, for example, has that Indie Rock feel in its music, and “Drown” and “Ministry” has a bit of a Indie Folk genre vibe. This album has something for everyone.

One of the cool things I thought about while listening was the contrast between the first song, Lux Prima, and the last song, Nox Lumina. In Latin, Lux Prima means “first light” and Nox Lumina means “Night Lights”. This reflects the lyrics and music of both songs. In Lux Prima, Karen O sings In Nox Lumina, she  sings “Everytime i close my eyes, Someone else’s paradise, Turns me into someone new, somewhere”. In the first song, she’s waking up in real life, whereas in the last one, she’s dreaming about being in someone else’s fantasy. Also, the music adds to this. The opening of Lux Prima is reminiscent of a sunrise, where in Nox Lumina, the music reflects a dream like state. Just thought that was cool.

All in all, Lux Prima is a great album by Karen O and Danger Mouse. With different music genres in each song, there’s bound to be something for everyone in this album. I look forward to their next collaboration.
