The Sunday liquor store ban in Texas could be a thing of the past. House Bill 1100 proposes liquor stores stay open seven days a week. Texans could join residents of the 42 other states that have already shaken off traditional blue laws.
The Blue Laws refer to any restriction or ban on specific activities on a certain day, like alcohol sales.
“I think that people are always going to want to drink. No matter what day, no matter what time,” Drinks On Us Co-owner James McCormick said.
The bill would grant liquor stores to be open from noon to 10 p.m. and extends regular Monday through Saturday hours, making new operating hours from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the exception of Sunday.
Drinks On Us is an alcohol delivery service in Lubbock. McCormick believes this bill could generate more business, but not necessarily for small businesses.
“For us, since we deliver, we don’t think that that’ll be too big of a problem. The biggest thing we see is Walmart opening stores which might affect our sales,” he said.
He worries some businesses may not be able to afford staying open that extra day. However, McCormick still supports the bill and the convenience-aspect behind it.
“Why not go two isles to get your hot dog buns and then your liquor, as opposed to go two city blocks to go get your liquor afterwards,” he said.
Liquor stores would still be closed New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
