TOVA Coffeehouse, a nonprofit organization fighting poverty in Lubbock, was burglarized of more than a thousand dollars on Sunday morning, according to the president of the organization.
Aaron Dawson, the President of TOVA Coffeehouse said police responded to the call around 9 a.m. this morning. When he got there, he said the front window was shattered, and the entire safe, with $1,400 was stolen.
“It’s kind of ironic that we had a break-in like this because these are the types of people we seek to restore,” said Dawson. “$1,400 is not an easy thing to absorb, but we are grateful. It could have been a lot worse,” he said.
Not all the money stolen was the coffee shop’s, according to Dawson, but also the earnings from the kids paintings they sold for the Children’s Home of Lubbock.
TOVA’s mission is to “break cycles of poverty in (the) community,” according to their website. Despite the setback, employees and customers said they are optimistic the coffee shop will still thrive in the future.
“I don’t think they will even miss a beat. Everybody loves TOVA and everyone that comes here is going to keep coming here,” said Breanne Minefee, a loyal customer.
“Even when I’m not working, I come in here. I was coming in here all last semester and last year before becoming and employee because I love the atmosphere here. The people were always so nice. There’s a focus on building a community here at TOVA,” said Jake Lester, an employee for the coffee house.
