The Texas Tech men’s basketball team defeated the Incarnate Word Cardinals, 87-37, to open the 2018-2019 season inside the United Supermarkets Arena.
Techs stingy defense pushed the Red Raiders 18-year home opening winning streak to 19.
There are a lot of new faces on this years Red Raider team like graduate transfer Tariq Owens who led the team in blocks with 6. “I think Tariq has the chance to be one of the best defensive players in college basketball” Head Coach Chris Beard said. Also, Freshman Guard Kyler Edwards who 10 points and Grad Transfer Guard Matt Mooney who also finished in double figures with 13 points.
In the first half the Red Raiders offense struggled to score and were only up 9 points at the half after Sophomore Guard Jarrett Culver hit a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left on the clock. “They gave us everything all we could handle in the first half, if Culver doesn’t hit that shot at the end of the half, it’s a six-point games”. Beard said.
In the 2nd half Tech’s offense was in full swing as they scored 48 points and their tough defense continued as they only allowed the Cardinals to score 7 total points the rest of the game. Culver was the catalyst for the Red Raiders big offensive run as he led all Tech scorers with 16 points.
Going forward, Tech will participate in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Classic as they host Mississippi Valley State Friday, November 9th at 8 p.m. inside the United Supermarkets Arena.
