Album Review: “Hello?” by Billy Uomo

Dream pop has increased in popularity, at least among artists in the independent music arena. Many of these kinds of artists have started to embrace electronics as a major key to making dream pop.

Billy Uomo, a persona of Aaron Leigh, the main songwriter of the band Babes, is embracing those electronics to create more of old-fashioned sound on his newest EP “Hello?”

“Hello?” is the second EP in a 10-part series, the first being “Wasted” released in 2017. Leigh said in a Facebook post that the songs on the EP are “a phone conversation, trying to make someone love a nasty wolf pig creature like me. (don’t feel too bad tho I’m beautiful on the inside.)” This post. surprisingly accompanying well with the really interesting artwork, matches what the EP sounds like: a dreamy indie pop album that transports you to Uomo’s world, however strange at times it might be.

The two standouts on the short EP were the last two songs, “Where Is Love” and “Hello?” On the two tracks, Leigh utilizes impressive instrumentation to mix his pop style with a bit of psychedelia to take listeners on a journey. Leigh’s vocals, at least on “Where Is Love,” were reminiscent of The Flaming Lips as well as the period of time where The Beatles embraced psychedelic music on a few albums. Throughout the album, the previously mentioned electronic sounds were also accompanied by really great guitar and bass sound.

Even while it was an EP, it was way too short. 13 minutes goes by quick, especially when you are enjoying a piece of work. But, Leigh did his job with this EP. It was a great introduction to who this artist is and will make me interested to listen to both his and his band’s other work. I am definitely looking forward to the other eight EP’s in this project.
