Keystone Pipeline Taken Offline After Spilling Thousands Of Gallons Of Oil In South Dakota

(Marshall County, SD)  —  Workers are taking the Keystone oil pipeline offline after it spilled more than 200-thousand gallons of oil in South Dakota today. A crew shut down the pipeline after detecting the leak approximately 35 miles south of a pumping station in Marshall County, South Dakota. TransCanada, the company that operates the pipeline, is working with state officials and the Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to assess the damage.

Earlier this year, President Trump signed a permit allowing the pipeline to transport more than 800-thousand barrels of oil per day from Alberta, Canada, to Nebraska, cutting through South Dakota. State regulators in South Dakota approved construction permits for the pipeline, and regulators in Nebraska are set to make a decision on the construction next week.
