Last night, Stephen Paddock opened fire from a window on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay and Casino. He released a shower of bullets into a crowd of civilians in Las Vegas for the Route 91 Harvest festival, a country music concert. At the time of the last update, at least 58 people are dead and more than 500 are injured. Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said the death toll may still rise. He added that police are now starting the long process of gathering evidence in the case.
The President and First Lady Melania Trump are leading a moment of silence for victims of the Las Vegas massacre on the South Lawn of White House. The President will travel to Las Vegas on Wednesday to meet with the governor, mayor, first responders and families impacted by the shooting.
A representative of the FBI says that so far, there is no connection between last night’s shooting and international terrorism. Reuters recently reported that ISIS is claiming responsibility for the shooting through its own news agency, however U.S. law enforcement has not confirmed this or mentioned Islamic radicalization as a potential motive at this time. ISIS claims that the gunman converted to Islam months ago. So far, there is no information to back that claim.
White House Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says those who died trying to save others in the shooting are an example that the American spirit will never be broken. Sanders was asked whether President Trump has considered stronger gun legislation. Sanders remarked that today is a day for mourning and national unity, not political debate.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
