(Miami, FL) — Princess Cruise Lines will pay 40 million dollars for deliberately polluting the ocean.
It’s the largest fine ever imposed for this type of crime in the U.S.
The California-based company will plead guilty to felony charges that the ship Caribbean Princess has been dumping oil-contaminated waste along the eastern seaboard since 2005.
The Justice Department says the company also tried to cover up the illegal dumping.
Ten-million dollars of the fine will go to service projects that benefit the marine environment.
