The five-person group from Russia, Motorama, releases Dialogues their fifth album. Motorama has created a sort of niche in the music industry by self-producing their music Lead vocal and guitarist expressed in an interview with Magic Magazine, “I always try to have it all recorded uncut, in one breath, and have it thus enhanced in its delicate rugged beauty”. The wistful lyrics and groovy tunes delivered in this album are a true reflection of the truth behind the raw music creating a beautiful sound.
Motorama’s sound seems to come from the deep feelings of cold wave with the smoothest infusion of pop music. Each song composed very well, from the sense of melancholy in the lyrics, to the suppressed bass and processed drum, both giving it that post- punk sound. The use of synthesizers and thrilling keyboards bring in the smoothness of pop, and the combination is very pleasing. These elements create a serene and calm groove that leads to a feel of relaxation.
The song “I See You” starts off immediately with a great bass entrances that sounds similar to a nice house beat. The beat continues with the addition of keyboards and some rather hazy vocals. The lyrics speak to a previous loved one, crying out asking how is he going to sleep when every time I close my eyes, I see you. The muffled vocals and the repetition of the attractive deep bass produce the perfect groovy setting and hard to resist moving your body.
The choice to self-produce their album is an interesting technique used for Motorma but one they are executing quite well. They have created music that is pure and would be great to hear live.
