Although told in just 6 tracks, the story in Her Tape #1 is conveyed beautifully and creatively. The artist, Her, is an up and coming duo from France and this EP is their first released album. The anticipation of the album was built high when they released two singles from the EP before the album. The full 6 tracks create a beautiful telling of a passionate love and admiration for a woman.
The songs “Five Minutes” and “Her” are both real jams. Both songs are filled with very intense love ballad-like lyrics, yet they both have very upbeat and interesting instrumental aspects. In “Her” the guitar riff repeated has a bright but muffled tone that generates a very atmospheric quality. The emotion from the background ghostly drones, the guitar riff, and the singers soulful voice composes a perfect ensemble. Often during the song, the vocals and twines of the guitar almost sound like there is some Artic Monkeys or Black Keys influence in this song. “Five minutes” develops anticipation with pangs of guitar bends and the edging vocals that is eventually relieved by the trickling tone of the guitar. This intro and build up is executed so excellently throughout the song with the repetition of the chorus.
Her tends to have some interesting guitar tones and riffs that spawns such a flighty, space like resonance. This combined with the bluesy, delicate vocals creates a dark atmosphere; however, the lyrics create a more personal, meaningful mood for the album. The other tracks like “Intro” and “Interlude” are sound clips that feature women speaking and a simple piano piece with narration in French. Overall this album is so interesting and well put together that it leaves listener wanting more. 6 tracks including only 4 songs with music is hardly enough to satisfy. Now that we’ve heard a taste of Her, hopefully a Her Tape #2 or maybe a less obvious titled album will be in our midst soon.
