Soft Hair has triumphantly created a “chill, sit back on the couch” album yet it also makes you want to move and groove on said couch. Soft Hair is a new duo with known artists, La Priest and Connan Mockasin , who combine their two unique styles seamlessly on their album , Soft Hair, to create a wonderful haze.
The album starts off with “Relaxed Lizard” which right off the bat shows you the unique sounds they’re bringing to the table. The song is definitely relaxing even for non-lizard listeners as it has a very floaty feeling that is heard throughout the album. This song, along with many others has some definite 80s inspiration. “Lying Has to Stop” is a prime example of these 80s influences, as it is filled with hazy drones of synth and many warped beats that melt together to engender the carefree sound. Other tracks like “Jealous Lies” have more of an idling, floating energy to them with synthesizer delivering upbeat tropical grooves rather than the hazy drones heard in earlier tracks.
Vocally Soft Hair is so interesting. The vocals have that wonderfully bizarre and weird energy you get from artist like Ariel Pink. Both La Priest and Connan Mockasin sing on the album, bringing a variety of vocal tones and effects. Although the feeling of the vocals isn’t very serious the lyrics often are highly impassioned, creating a contrast that sets them apart from other artists that often take on this sound.
Soft Hair’s album has brought some great new jams and hopefully we’ll see more from them in the future. If not, their similar sounding solo careers just might quench that Soft Hair thirst.
