  • Drivers can expect various day-time lane closures on the Marsha Sharp Freeway frontage road and Spur 327 main lanes Wednesday and Thursday. The closures are to allow for Texas Department of Transportation work on paving operations, according to a TxDOT news release. On Wednesday, crews will close to traffic the eastbound Marsha Sharp Freeway frontage road east of Milwaukee Avenue. On Thursday, the freeway’s eastbound frontage road lanes west of Milwaukee Avenue will be closed to traffic. Also on Thursday, crews will close eastbound Spur 327 main lanes for paving work. Lanes are expected to re-open to traffic in the late afternoons and no overnight work is planned.
  • Lubbock Police are asking for help in solving a 24-year old murder case. KCBD reports that 32-year-old Barbara Jean Hinojosa was found dead in her home on 37th Street about 9:25 a.m. on Oct. 12, 1991. Barbara’s house had been burglarized and she was stabbed multiple times. Last October, police received an anonymous Crime Line tip with pertinent, but limited information on this case. Police are asking the caller to contact police again. Anyone else with information is urged to call Detective Franco at 775-2405 or Detective Pena at 775-2403.
  • A federal court hearing is today in Dallas on whether Texas should be able to put a mentally ill man to death. Texas Defender Service tells “The Dallas Morning News” Scott Panetti shouldn’t be executed because he’s so mentally unstable he has no grasp of reality.  They want a new psychoanalysis to be done.  But the Attorney General’s office says Panetti’s attorneys are overstating his mental problems and he actually understands what’s going on.  He was scheduled to be executed last year for the murder of his in-laws in 1992, but a judge stayed it.
  • Anyone going to State Fair of Texas needs to leave their selfie sticks at home.  The Fair announced the ban yesterday, saying it’s not that hard for people to take pictures of themselves with Big Tex without the use of the stick.  Other theme parks have banned selfie sticks as well, including Six Flags and Disney-owned parks.  The Fair opens on Friday.
  • Pope Francis has a busy schedule on his first full day in the U.S. The Pope will attend an official welcome ceremony this morning on the South Lawn of the White House. He’ll meet with President Obama in the Oval Office before leading a short parade around the Ellipse in the popemobile. The Pontiff is then scheduled to hold prayers at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, and will celebrate Mass this afternoon at the Catholic University of America. Pope Francis will also make a saint of Father Junipero Serra, the Franciscan friar who founded the first nine of California’s 21 missions.
  • In music news, a federal judge says Warner Chappell Music doesn’t own the rights to the song, “Happy Birthday to You.” Warner has claimed it owns the song since it bought a publishing group that had the copyright for it. However, a judge ruled that that company’s predecessor never had a copyright over the lyrics, only the arrangements of the music. Warner takes in an estimated $2 million a year from the popular song.
