- Academy sports and outdoors, a premier sports, outdoor and lifestyle retailer, announced that it will open a second location in Lubbock at the intersection of 114th St. and Quaker Ave. in 2016. The new store will be approximately 63,000 feet and bring 100 new jobs to the area.
- Presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Marco Rubio have padded their campaign chests in Dallas County and a third candidate, Chris Christie, is in town today. Clinton’s fundraiser was hosted by noted Dallas lawyer Marc Stanley and his wife, Wendy. Meanwhile, last night a group of Rubio backers met with him at the Highland Park home of real estate magnate Harlan Crow. And today, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his wife Gene are hosting Christie for a fundraiser. The New Jersey governor is known to be a Cowboys fan and occasionally joins Jones in his suite at AT&T Stadium.
- The Dallas City Council has approved a three-billion-dollar budget, which includes 24-million-dollars for road repair and maintenance. Also, the police department budget is about 12-million-dollars higher with some money going to pay raises and overtime. To fund the spending plan, the Dallas property tax rate is unchanged. However, property values are up about seven percent, so tax revenue will be higher. Sales tax revenue is also projected to be about three-percent higher.
- The head of Volkswagen is stepping down. CEO Martin Winterkorn announced his resignation today, days after it was revealed the German automaker was rigging diesel cars to cheat on emissions tests. In a statement released by Volkswagen, Winterkorn said he is shocked by the events of the past few days. He added he is “stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group.” The company said yesterday that eleven million of its diesel cars included software that allowed them to detect when they were being tested — and then alter the engines to conceal true emissions levels.
- Several women holding a protest while Pope Francis led a prayer service at St. Matthew’s Cathedral are under arrest. WUSA-TV reports the some of the demonstrators laid down on the ground about a block from the cathedral this afternoon. The group doesn’t think the Pope has shown he cares about the equality of women. Some non-protesters cheered as the arrests were made.
- The Archdiocese of New York is teaming up with the city to give the homeless a place to rest their heads. Timothy Cardinal Dolan joined Mayor de Blasio to announce that the Archdiocese plans to provide up to 150 beds this winter for homeless individuals living on the streets. Mayor de Blasio says its the first step in an effort to open at least 500 beds to the homeless in unused spaces inside religious institutions. Organizers say the move demonstrates the Church’s long-standing tradition to help the poor and needy and represents the largest allocation of beds in the “Opening Doors” initiative.
