Sports Update – June 1, 2015

Is Josh Hamilton officially back? The outfielder Rangers’ pinch-hit, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth gave the Rangers a 4-3 win over the Red Sox.  Hamilton has hit .273 with two homers and five RBI in his first seven games back with the Rangers.  Adrian Beltre knocked in two runs before leaving with a thumb injury that is expected to sideline him for two weeks.  Ross Ohlendorf was credited with his first victory of the season for Texas, which has won eight-of-10 to move to 26-and-25 on the year.

Johnny Manziel is at it again! The Browns quarterback had another fan that wasn’t going to leave him alone.  During the AT&T Byron Nelson golf tournament on Saturday, the second-year QB was bothered by a fan and threw a water bottle in his direction.  According to ESPN, the police and Browns organization said it wasn’t a big deal.  The incident occurred at the pool of the Four Seasons Hotel.  One of Manziel’s friends shoved the badgering fan, who made contract with Manziel.  There was no police report and the fan declined to press charges regarding the shove.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham plans to reinstate its football program just six months after disbanding it for monetary reasons. University president Ray Watts made the announcement at a press conference Monday, stating that the financially struggling sport will be run by new funds raised from both public and private sectors as long as the athletic department is able to meet the required donations. The decision will allow UAB to remain in Conference USA, which requires all of its full members to have football. The Blazers are tentatively expected to return playing in 2016. Watts dropped football in December, saying that the cost of running the program had placed too large a strain on the athletic budget.

Maria Sharapova was eliminated today in the fourth round of the French Open, while Serena Williams had to battle back from a set down to stay alive. Lucie Safarova knocked out the defending champion Sharapova in a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 upset, while the top-seeded Williams avoided a similar fate by rebounding from a disastrous start to earn a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over fellow American Sloane Stephens. Williams will continue her pursuit of a third French Open crown against Sara Errani, the 2012 runner-up who reached a fourth straight quarterfinal at Roland Garros with a 6-2, 6-2 pounding of Julia Goerges.
