Texas Tech thrower Hannah Carson has been named the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Female Performer of the Year, the conference office announced today.

Carson, fresh off a weekend where she earned the first two Big 12 titles of her career, was voted the winner of this award by the conference’s coaches. She becomes the first Lady Raider to win this award, and the second Tech athlete to do so, after Kennedy Kithuka won the men’s version of the honor, in 2014.

“To become the best is something I strive to achieve,” Carson said. It is truly a blessing and an honor to become the first in Texas Tech’s history to be voted as Big 12 Female Performer of the Year.”

Carson has had an incredible outdoor season for the Lady Raiders. She has won the shot put at four different meets, the discus at five different meets and the javelin at seven different meets, giving her 16 event titles in 2015, the most recent of those being her Big 12 javelin and discus championships.

In Ames, she started out by blowing away the field in the discus throw with a launch of 53.46m/175-05 on her first attempt. The rest of the field was never able to come within two meters of that mark, as Carson put up the top two throws in the event. From there, she came within a meter of the Big 12 meet record in the javelin, with a throw of 56.36m/184-11 to win the title there, as well.

“What a great honor for Hannah,” Texas Tech head coach Wes Kittley said. “I cannot think of any person more deserving. She has gone through so much, battling through three surgeries, and she is truly healthy for the first time in her career. She has persevered so much. I am thrilled for her and this program.”

Carson currently ranks third in the nation in the javelin, and No. 22 in the discus. She is in position to qualify for the NCAA Championships in both events, at next weekend’s NCAA West Preliminary Round, May 28-30, in Austin, Texas.
