A bill to repeal in-state tuition for illegal immigrants is headed to the full Texas Senate.
The Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee approved Senate Bill 1819 on Wednesday by a 4-3 vote. New Braunfels Republican Donna Campbell says the bill makes sure illegal immigrants aren’t rewarded and wants to foster a legal immigration system.
But opponents say the repeal will hurt the state’s economy and illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as kids by their parents. Now Texas originally passed the in-state tuition bill in 2001.
