LUBBOCK – Former Texas Tech University professor and KTXT-FM general manager Clive J. Kinghorn, Ph.D., passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015. He was 77.
Kinghorn was born in Rigby, Idaho on Aug. 23, 1937 and was a resident of Lubbock, Texas.
As faculty advisor, Kinghorn was a longtime fixture at Texas Tech’s on-campus radio station KTXT-FM, and served for several decades as part of the faculty of the Texas Tech School of Mass Communications, according to Derrick Ginter, the current KTXT general manager.
Ginter described Kinghorn as a “great teacher, mentor and friend” to the many students who were in his classes and involved with KTXT radio.
According to Ginter, Kinghorn is the only one to have managed all of the university’s broadcast entities: KTXT-FM, KOHM-FM and KTXT-TV. Kinghorn worked at Texas Tech University from 1970 until his retirement in 2001.
Dennis Harp, Ph.D. and former Assistant Dean in the College of Media & Communication, remembers Kinghorn as a great friend, colleague and professional who influenced the lives and careers of hundreds of students by seeking to help each one achieve his or her potential.
“He was very good at delegating authority and responsibility among his staff in an attempt to teach leadership skills, management decision making, and a competitive environment that’s essential for any media operation,” Harp said. “I especially enjoyed happening upon one of Clive’s teaching moments involving humor. His style of expressing humor was to say something in all seriousness about a situation that people around him would have to pause and think about before interacting and laughing. He used his wit to good advantage.”
Jerry Hudson, Ph.D. and former dean of the College of Media & Communication, said Kinghorn’s passion was to provide a professional environment for students who worked at KTXT-FM.
“Dr. Clive Kinghorn was ‘Dr. Radio’ for Texas Tech University and the Lubbock community,” Hudson said. “I was lucky to observe and experience the benefits of his loyalty and dedication to students, faculty, and the Lubbock community.”
Kinghorn’s viewing will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at Resthaven Funeral Home at 5740 West 19th Street in Lubbock. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7016 Frankford Ave., in Lubbock.
