An initial cold front moved through Lubbock earlier today. Winds have turned easterly and temperatures will continue to steadily drop this evening.
A more significant push of very cold air will arrive in the Hub-City early Thursday morning. This new wave of cold air will bring plummeting temperatures, gusty north winds, and wind chills near zero to Lubbock. While earlier projections indicated a chance of light snow, especially west of Lubbock, it now appears that the air-mass will be too dry to support any significant snowfall.
What can you expect?
Thursday morning will be frigid! Temperatures early Thursday will be in the upper teens, to near 20°. However, with a 25-40 MPH wind factored in, it will feel like -5°, to 5° on exposed skin. Unfortunately, Thursday afternoon doesn’t look much better. High temperatures will struggle into the mid and upper 20’s, under mostly cloudy skies. Winds chills will remain in the teens through the afternoon.
While , as mentioned, significant snow is not expected; snow flurries could still fall Thursday afternoon. Because of how light the snow will be, hazardous travel conditions are not expected to develop – cold temperatures will be the only hazard. Dress in warm layers if headed out Thursday or Friday. Overnight wind chills could become dangerously low Thursday and Friday mornings, if not dressed appropriately.
Cold air won’t stick around too long – Lubbock will be back in the 60’s by Sunday – ahead of yet another strong cold front!
