The dry, gusty, and mild weather pattern that west Texas has been stuck-in for the past few weeks, will temporarily break down Wednesday through Friday, because of a strong cold front. A few weak cold fronts will move through the South Plains prior to this time-frame, however, these front will have little effect on our temperatures.
By Wednesday night, an Arctic cold front will move through Lubbock. Behind the front, wind will gust over 40 MPH, temperatures will fall dramatically, and a slight chance of light wintry precipitation will develop.
At this time, it appears that the return of cold weather will be the biggest story! An extended period of below-freezing temperatures remain possible, beginning late Wednesday – peaking Friday morning – when temperatures could plummet into the lower teens. Keep in mind, with a brisk wind, wind chill temps, or what it feels like to exposed skin, will be near zero. The time-frame to watch for any wintry weather, including frozen precipitation and hazardous travel, will be Thursday morning, through Friday morning. If any precipitation manages to develop it will likely fall as a freezing rain, sleet, and snow mix before changing to light snow by Thursday evening.
At the moment, any travel issues, or significant accumulation of snow and ice is not expected. Though, this is a developing situation, and further changes in the forecast are likely. Bottom line – enjoy this mild weather, these days are numbered!
