Cooler Saturday, Wintry Sunday?

West Texas’ brief string of gusty, dusty, and mild days is about to come to an end. Much colder air has been locked to our north for the past couple of days, allowing Lubbock’s afternoon high temperatures to soar into the 70’s – nearly 15° above Lubbock’s average high temperature.

However, a series of strong cold fronts will force frigid air to spill southward, and into Lubbock. The first front will arrive Saturday. It is possible that the front could blow through before sunrise, keeping Saturday afternoon temperatures chilly. However, if the front does not pass through until later in the day, Lubbock will manage to warm into the upper 50’s by mid-afternoon.

Either way, much colder temperatures will rapidly push into west Texas Saturday evening. Shortly after, a storm system will move out of New Mexico late Saturday night and cross our region Sunday morning. Cold air and moisture will remain in-place as the system moves through our region, which will allow light snow showers to move through the South Plains, and possibly Lubbock, early Sunday.

Any snow and ice accumulation should remain light – between 1/2 and 1 1/2 inches – through Sunday afternoon. Still, with temperatures remaining below freezing Sunday afternoon, roads could become icy and dangerous to travel on.
