Our Monday wasn’t too uncomfortable; highs near 60°, under mostly cloudy skies. It’ll be even nicer by Wednesday, under a little more sunshine and afternoon temperatures in the 70’s. But, you’ll need to enjoy it while it lasts…
An unseasonably cold air mass and a strong west-coast storm system will both begin to impact west Texas, as early as Thursday. The first to affect the South Plains will be the cold, Arctic, air. The cold front, and associated chill, will arrive Thursday. At the moment, it looks like the front will move through Lubbock Thursday evening. However, in this type of a weather pattern, these fronts tend to arrive earlier than predicted, rather than later.
Temperatures behind the front will fall to near freezing by Friday morning, and struggle to reach 40° Friday afternoon. With dense low clouds and gusty winds, it will feel like winter. Though, the calender still reads fall! The cold air will also be stubborn to leave, with Saturday and Sunday afternoons only topping-out in the upper 30’s and 40’s.
Now, for the $64,000 question, “Will it snow?”
As I mentioned, weather patterns like these are very hard to forecast, and give weather forecast models a lot of trouble. With that said, it does appear that there will be some-sort of precipitation behind the front Thursday night, through Friday. However, at least initially, it appears our main threat will be from freezing drizzle, and sleet. Lubbock’s best chance for any of the ‘white stuff ‘ would hold off until late Sunday, as the ‘main’ storm system slowly approaches from New Mexico.
All of this is just speculation, at this point. Be prepared for many changes in the forecast, between now and Thursday morning. As always, listen for updates on air at FM 88.1, online at http://www.ktxtfm.org/raider/weather/, or on our social media pages!
