Thursday Rain?

West Texas’ first significant Fall cold front will approach the area late Thursday, into Friday morning. Ahead of this front, moisture has moved into our area, courtesy of both former Hurricane Ingrid and Tropical Storm Manuel.

While Thursday will begin nice, clouds will increase through the mid-morning hours. Then, as an upper-air disturbance approaches west Texas, rain chances will increase dramatically. Initially, the best opportunity for rain will be located south of Lubbock. However, even in the Hub-City, rain and thunderstorms will be possible after noon. A few isolated storms will be capable of producing very heavy rain, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning.

As the cold front sags closer to Lubbock, another round of storms is expected to develop in the Panhandle, and move through the South Plains, sometime early Friday morning. Similar to storms Thursday afternoon, a few could be strong and produce heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning.

The forecast quickly clears out Friday afternoon, with highs only in the 70’s. Temperatures will be in the 70’s at kickoff, under mostly sunny skies, as Texas Tech takes on Texas State Saturday evening. Grab a jacket, though! By final play, temperatures will be in the mid 60’s.
