Severe Thunderstorms Friday Afternoon?

The last time west Texas was affected by widespread severe weather was back in mid-June. However, it appears Lubbock’s string of days with light wind and fair skies will end Friday.

A strong storm system will move into the central plains Friday morning, sending a cold front into west Texas late in the day. Initially, storms will be confined to eastern New Mexico. However, as the afternoon progresses, more storms will develop and  gradually shift eastward, towards the I-27 corridor after 2 PM.

Isolated storms will be capable of producing large hail, severe wind gusts, and brief heavy rain. Though, closer to sunset, the tornado potential will increase, slightly.  Regardless, heavy rain and storms will stick around into early Saturday morning as the cold front, only slowly, moves through the area.

Heavy rainfall will be the main concern into Saturday morning as heavy storms slow their eastward progression, even further. A few areas could see heavy rainfall accumulations in a short period of time; leading to flash flooding. Clearing, breezy, and much cooler conditions are expected Saturday afternoon.

If you’re headed out Friday evening, remember to check the latest forecasts and advisories. Also, make sure you have a severe weather safety plan, before severe weather strikes.
