Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) – Germany’s Thomas Bach has been
elected as the next president of the International Olympic Committee.
Bach, a gold medalist in fencing at the 1976 Montreal Games, was among six
candidates to replace outgoing president Jacques Rogge. The other five were
Sergei Bubka of the Ukraine, Ser Miang Ng of Singapore, Ching-Kuo Wu of
Taiwan, Richard Carrion of Puerto Rico and Denis Oswald of Switzerland.
The first ballot did not produce a majority among the six, but Wu received the
fewest votes and was eliminated from the process. Bach was chosen on the
second ballot.
Bach has been the IOC’s vice president since 2000. The 59-year-old lawyer will
become the ninth president in the 119-year history of the IOC and first
Olympic champion to hold the position.
Rogge is stepping down after 12 years.
