The Texas Tech volleyball team opens the Big 12 conference season against the Oklahoma Sooners at McCasland Field House in Norman, Okla. Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Texas Tech outside hitter Emily Wright said the Red Raiders look to surprise a few people.
“We play all out every point and we are not expected to do things,” Wright said. “This year we will surprise a lot of people even though we have had a tough preseason so far. I think since Big 12 is here now, it will be a good season and we will surprise a lot of people.”
Texas Tech was voted seventh in the Big 12 preseason poll. Oklahoma was picked to finish fifth.
Texas Tech has not won a Big 12 opener since 2008 when they beat Colorado. The last time the Red Raiders won in Norman was 2002.
Breeann David leads the conference in kills averaging 4 per game. She recorded 23 kills and 14 digs against Texas State where the Red Raiders pulled off a comeback win in the fifth set.
The Oklahoma Sooners are 12-2 and are currently receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.
Wright said the Red Raiders need to step up their game.
“There are some really awesome teams in the Big 12,” Wright said. “I think we need to step up our game a little bit and be able to play all around volleyball.”
