Tuesday will begin mild, with temperatures near 70° in Lubbock. Skies will be partly cloudy. Winds will be on the strong side, with gusts approaching 30 mph.
By lunch, clouds will clear, leaving behind mostly sunny skies. Because of dry westerly winds and clear conditions, temperatures will soar to record-breaking levels across the South Plains. High temperatures in the low 100’s are likely. Tuesday’s record high is 101°, which was set in 2008. There is a good chance that a new record will be set by late Tuesday afternoon.
Along with the heat, there is a slight chance of isolated, late afternoon, thunderstorms east of Lubbock. Any storms that manage to develop will be capable of producing large hail and severe wind gusts, as well as dangerous lightning. Storms will end by mid evening.
With dangerous heat levels Tuesday afternoon, it is imperative to remain hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the heat of the day, or between 1 and 7 PM.
