Department of Design to Host TechStyle and Cotton & Denim Runway Exhibition

Texas Tech University’s Department of Design will hold the 2013 TechStyle Event, featuring student awards and the Cotton & Denim Runway Exhibition, on Saturday (April 27).

The event will be held at the Allen Theatre in the Student Union Building. A reception begins at 6 p.m., with the fashion show beginning at 7 p.m.

The Cotton & Denim Runway Exhibition is a competition among students sponsored by Plains Cotton Cooperative Association (PCCA), Cotton Council International (CCI) and Cotton Incorporated. Winners receive a trip to Cotton Inc. headquarters in North Carolina and New York.

The denim is provided by PCCA, and as part of the project, students toured the American Cotton Growers Denim Mill located in Littlefield.

“The project is a lot of work,” said Nicole Ramsey, a student participant and event coordinator. “It is a really great way to learn the ins and outs of the fashion industry.”

Dani Caserta, a fashion design and retail major from Waco, created a fitted women’s skinny jean for the project. She said the most challenging aspect was fitting the zipper just right.

“It takes about one or two days to sew the jeans,” Caserta said. “We do both a men’s and women’s jean, and the zipper is pretty tricky.”

This year’s guest speaker is Christy Hartin from KCBD-TV.

Tickets are $10 at the door; and after-five attire is suggested. Tickets also may be purchased through the Apparel Design and Manufacturing Program in the Department of Design.

The public is welcome to tour the exhibition free of charge, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, in the SUB ballroom.
