WEST – Even as residents in West begin to return to their homes in the areas surrounding the fertilizer plant, 350 households remain without water.
The frenetic atmosphere that enveloped West after last week’s explosion at a local fertilizer company seemed to wind down as the sun streamed through the budding trees in front of the town’s City Hall. Yet officials provided a stark outlook for the community’s future. Saying that the recovery could take months or years, Mayor Pro Tem, Steve Vanek, still shared a message of encouragement with residents:
“Citizens we are all in this together, and we are with you, and we will stand by you, until the last nail is driven.”
As authorities work to clear the blast zone and allow all residents to return to their homes—if only to retrieve their vehicles—no official comment has been made on the cause of the fire and subsequent explosion. Since the blast, there have been 14 confirmed fatalities. President Obama is expected to attend a memorial service for 12 first responders on Thursday.
