Another hot afternoon is expected across the South Plains. Highs will top-out near 90° by mid afternoon, under mostly sunny skies. Winds will also be a big story. While initially light, westerly breezes will dramatically increase through the day. After lunch, some gusts could approach 40 mph. With dry soils and gusty winds, blowing dust will be likely across the city of Lubbock Monday afternoon and evening.
High winds and dry conditions will also lead to elevated wildfire concerns across west Texas. On Sunday evening, the National Weather Service office in Lubbock placed the entire region under a ‘Fire Weather Watch’, which goes into effect Monday afternoon. This watch could be upgraded to a ‘Red Flag Warning’ before Monday afternoon. Using an outdoor flame is strongly discouraged through Wednesday, as winds will remain gusty.
A cold front, arriving Tuesday evening, will bring an increase in thunderstorm chances to the area. Any storms that do develop could contain small hail and damaging winds. Following this front, MUCH cooler weather will filter into the area, meaning a very chilly middle of the week.
