A Strong storm system will approach west Texas on Wednesday with light rain, gusty winds, and cool temperatures. Winds will blow out of the southeast 20-30 mph, with gusts nearing 40 mph by afternoon. Periods of light rain and drizzle will accompany thick cloud cover through the entire day. Then, strong thunderstorms may move in Wednesday evening.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed southeastern portions of the South Plains under a slight risk for severe thunderstorms on Wednesday. The greatest threats with these thunderstorms will be large hail and wind gusts over 60 mph. Storms will likely develop west of Lubbock between 3 and 5 PM, then move into the Lubbock area later Wednesday evening. These storms will be quick moving, so remain alert to drastically changing weather conditions as you go about your day. Again, the most favorable conditions for severe weather will be south and east of Lubbock. Though, the city could also experience strong thunderstorms this evening.
While this won’t be a heavy rainfall event, a large portion of the state appear to get in on the wet weather. The Hydrometeorological Prediction Center is predicting that a large portion of the state of Texas will receive over an inch of rain. For west Texas, amounts between .10 and .50 in. of rain are expected. Isolated heavier amounts are possible across areas where the heaviest storms manage to develop.
There is also a small chance of frozen precipitation mixing with the rain Wednesday night, with chances for frozen precipitation being greatest across the northern South Plains. No accumulations are anticipated.
Have a great Wednesday,
Cutter Martin (KTXT Weather)
