Monday morning is going to be a cold one, with temperatures in the mid to upper 20’s as you head out the door. Winds will make it feel more like the upper teens. Afternoon readings will warm into the mid 50’s across the central South Plains, which is close to average for this time of year. Winds will be much lighter through the day; gusts only in the 15-20 mph range are expected. Though, with temperatures in the 50’s, any breeze will feel cool.
Fair weather will not last very long, however. By Monday evening, cloud cover will begin to rapidly increase across the area, with skies becoming overcast overnight. Precipitation will then begin to form across southern portions of the area and move north early Tuesday morning.
The image above, produced by the North American Mesoscale Model (NAM), shows this nicely. By 12 AM Tuesday, showers are beginning to form across west Texas and move northward. Later on Tuesday the center of the area of low pressure causing this rain will likely be between Lubbock and Amarillo, as it continues to slowly move east. Depending on exactly where this storm goes, the greater Lubbock area could see rain change over to snow on Tuesday.
This is another model’s ‘take’ on where snow will occur and how much will accumulate. The area in orange represents where over 6 inches of snow could fall by Tuesday morning. Light green areas depict 1-3 inches of accumulation. Other forecast models show near a foot of snow across the northern Texas panhandle for the same time period! On the other hand, other models are much drier. Right now, all that can be said with any certainty is that this developing weather situation is fluid, and a lot will likely change. For the time being, prepare for much colder and wet weather, beginning Monday night. I’ll be monitoring this system, and our listeners will be the first to know if changes do indeed occur.
Have a great Monday,
Cutter Martin (KTXT Weather)
