Latin Jazz Pianist Nachito Herrera to Perform at Texas Tech

He performed with the Havana Symphony Orchestra by the time he was 12. He boasts a nomination for both a Grammy and an Emmy Award and received the American Heritage Award last year for his accomplishments and contributions to the United States.

Latin Jazz pianist Nachito Herrera continues Texas Tech University’s Presidential Lecture & Performance Series at 7 p.m. March 1 in the Allen Theatre on the university campus.

Herrera joined the jazz group ¡Cubanismo! in 1996 as its lead pianist, arranger and music director, and played in the many of the world’s finest concert halls and prestigious festivals.

Herrera continued performing with other notable artists after working with ¡Cubanismo!, including Michel Camillo, Michael Tainer, Tata Quines, Carlos de Puerto, Tito Fuentes, Oscar de Leon, Giovanni Hidalgo, Emilio del Monte, Jesus Alenany, Chick Corea, Doc Severinsen and McCoy Tyner.

Since touring the United States in 2009 as a member of the Afro-Cuban All Stars, he has appeared at the Omaha Jazz & Blues Festival, St. John’s University in Minnesota, and the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. Herrera has received two Grammy nominations as part of his work with ¡Cubanismo!, and was a recipient of 25 on the Rise – Hispanic Leaders by the Minnesota Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The Minnesota Music Awards named him Best Latin Artist, and City Pages named him Best Jazz Artist of the Twin Cities.

Herrera earned a master’s degree in music from Superior Institute of Art in Havana, Cuba and now teaches at the MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis.

A meet-and-greet and CD signing with Herrera will take place following his performance.
